Diabetes Risk - Prevention is Key



People are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at an alarmingly increasing rate in our society. For a disease that used to be relatively rare, this represents that more and more people are putting themselves at risk with lifestyle and dietary choices. If you are considered about diabetes risk and whether your lifestyle may increase your chances of developing this disease, you should evaluate your lifestyle across a variety of parameters to determine if you should take the next steps necessary to potentially diagnosing the disease. While genetically our families can contribute to some of the diabetes risk, lifestyle is often a bigger trigger.
According to the National Center for Health, a disturbingly large portion of the American public is obese, a condition of significant excess weight and fat that is also the number one cause of Type 2 diabetes risk.




Because fat in the body has the ability to decrease the body's ability to use insulin in the proper way, a higher weight on the scale puts people at risk for developing a resistance to insulin, which in turn prevents their bodies from correctly self-monitoring blood sugar levels. The effect of obesity on the likelihood that a person will develop diabetes is not just contained to adults either. Since 1980, the number of children that have been diagnosed with diabetes related to obesity has nearly tripled.
A sedentary or inactive lifestyle is also a huge contributor to diabetes risk. Lack of a proper amount of exercise and physical activity is likely to contribute to obesity, which has already been show to greatly increase risk of the development of Type 2 diabetes. Because muscles are much better equipped to absorb insulin than fat, a person can decrease the likelihood that they will develop a resistance to insulin, such as the one that is common with diabetes.
Give your body a helping hand at reducing diabetes risk and producing as many healthy muscles as possible by feeding it the lean proteins that it needs to create them. Keep in mind that eating too many saturated fats and processed sugars is the way to produce insulin blocking fat cells which take a lot of energy to eliminate. Try to incorporate proteins like fish into your diet, instead of the traditional steak and potatoes. Fish will not only help you build muscle, it will provide you with other nutrients, like Omega 3 fatty acids that are wonderful for your body.
