Proper diet and exercise is the foundation of treatment for diabetes. The proper meal plan is not an option for a diabetic it is absolutely necessary for quality of life. You have to follow a diet to keep your hemoglobin A1C within the normal range. If you keep this hemoglobin A1C within the normal range that means that your complications will be also under control.
The right diet can cause you to lose weight which is very important for a diabetic. Weight loss can do many things such as even reduce your risk of developing diabetes type 2, can prevent the progression of the disease and complications, eliminate the need for certain medications, and increase your life expectancy. There are diets that have 1200 - 1500 and 1800 calories depending on your weight now and your activity level.

The chief source of energy for your body are carbohydrates. There is much discussion about how much carbohydrates should be in a diabetic diet. Carbohydrates can cause the fat to go up in your blood. Simple sugars are carbohydrates which are going to elevate your blood sugar. Therefore, the carbohydrates will be reduced in the diabetic diet.
Protein does not raise your glucose in your blood. Consider a low fat choice of protein such as low fat cheese or a lean meat rather than the high fat type of protein.
Fat is the same for everyone - never eat more than 30% of your diet in fat. Remember there are different types of fat such as olive oil vs. butter.
Consider cutting alcohol out of your diet. Take enough vitamins and minerals and drink water.
Consider consulting a professional to develop a meal plan for you. This is the most important step that you can take in preventing the complications of diabetes. Do not delay in taking this necessary step.
