Diet For Treating Type 2 Diabetes

A healthy diet can make all the difference when you are suffering from type 2 diabetes. Other than the daily medications and the exercise routine, you will also need to eat right. The right diet will help you immensely when it comes to keeping your blood sugar level within permissible limits. So how can a diet help you do all these things? Well, the best thing to do is to go to a dietician or a physician and get a diet chart made. This article is only meant give you a quick overview of the important aspects of a recommended diet for a diabetic.
The first thing you need to watch out for is the carbohydrates food group. Carbohydrates are risky for diabetes patients because they break down directly in to sugar or glucose. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body but too much glucose in the body causes diabetes. Carbohydrates are of two types - simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are sucrose, fructose, lactose, etc. These are

usually found in refined sugar, fruits, milk, etc. Complex carbohydrates are mainly starchy food items like wheat and rice. Most cereals are complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates take more time to digest and break down. Hence they are considered to be better for diabetics.
To keep your carbohydrate intake in check, you have to figure out how much carbohydrate you need per day. Then based on that, you can divide your carbohydrate count across your meals. This way you get to eat what you want and still keep your daily intake of carbohydrates in check. A dietitian will be able to tell you how much carbohydrate you need on a daily basis.
Another major part of your diet is fiber. Fiber is the undigested part of the plant, mainly cellulose. This is not absorbed into the body but helps the body by making bowel movements easier. High fiber diets are associated with lower blood pressure, lowered risk of heart attack and also a lowered risk of obesity. It is especially beneficial for diabetics because it delays absorption of sugar into the body and thus helps control blood sugar level. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals and bran products have high fiber content.
Fat is something that you need to avoid as much as possible. Dairy products and baked items usually have the highest fat content. So cheese, whole milk and confections are all high in fat. Avoiding these as much as possible will be good for you. When it comes to meat, try having lean meat like poultry and fish instead of something like beef. Also avoid frying your food. Try to bake, grill, broil or boil your food instead.
Salt is another thing to watch out for. All diabetics are advised to go on a low salt diet. Salt and diabetes both raise your risk for high blood pressure. Avoiding canned food items, packaged food etc will help you lower your salt intake. You also must switch to low salt cooking.
