Type 2 diabetes occurs when your pancreas produces sufficient insulin but your body does not respond to it; there is some kind of block in the cell's ability to utilize it. Instead it remains in your blood stream and is then unable to help glucose enter your muscle and fat cells. Over time, excessive high blood sugar levels are extremely harmful to your body.
If you suspect that you are vulnerable to type 2 diabetes, do not hesitate to see your health care provider as soon as possible. The earlier your condition is diagnosed, the earlier treatment can begin. The thought that you might have diabetes can be frightening but be assured that people with this condition have continued to live long healthy lives with just a few modifications.
The following symptoms should alert you to the possibility:
  • frequent urination
  • unusual thirst
  • excessive drinking
  • extreme hunger
  • unusual fatigue
  • irritability
  • blurred vision
Ignoring these symptoms increases your risk to develop type 2 and its corresponding complications:
  • heart disease
  • eye problems
  • kidney damage
  • impotency
  • and damage to your nervous system
Although not all people with impaired insulin resistance develop diabetes, it is possible to delay and even prevent it.
How can you stop your symptoms developing into full-blown type 2 diabetes? Assess your physical condition and your lifestyle:
  • are you overweight? You don't really need to jump on the scales, take out a tape measure and check to see if your waist measurement exceeds 40 inches/102cms for a male or 34.6 inches/85cms for a female.
  • is your diet a sensible one or loaded with fats and sugars?
  • do you exercise regularly?
  • do you smoke?
A "YES" answer to these questions should prepare you for a shock - you can develop type 2 diabetes with that kind of lifestyle and the possibility of getting it increases if you have diabetes in your family.
Realistic goals could include:
1. A balanced diet helps to prevent type 2 diabetes. You don't need special food; aim for a low-fat, moderate protein, low-GI carbohydrate diet. Indulging in sweets in any form should be avoided. Fried food and meat should make a rare appearance. Instead, have more non-starch vegetables such as cabbage and spinach, and avoid white rice and white bread. Go over your diet with a dietitian to ensure the correct portions of each food type.
2. Regular exercise uses up stored fat and blood sugars. Why not alternate your activities so exercise does not become a chore? Brisk walking, cycling, swimming and dancing, can keep your blood sugars within healthy ranges. Thirty minutes, four times a week is great, more would be better.
3. Maintain an ideal weight ... lose surplus weight, those excess pounds around the abdominal area indicate the presence of high levels of insulin and glucose in your blood stream.
With exercise and a healthy diet, in a couple of days you will start to feel and look better! No need to weigh yourself, your loose clothing around your waistline will show you you are on the right track to reducing your blood sugar levels.
These simple measures will help you prevent developing type 2 diabetes. But do not postpone a medical check-up if you have any or all of the above symptoms.
