Nutrition Facts For Children With Diabete



DM or Diabetes Mellitus is characterized as deficiency in insulin which results in changes in almost all areas of the body. Diabetes is the most frequent endocrine disorder of childhood.
Children with Diabetes require the same nutrition as children without diabetes except they need to eliminate concentrated sugar from their diet. The sugars can come in the form of white bread, donuts, cake, cookies, etc.
The food intake depends on a balanced diet from the basic food groups: milk, meat, vegetables, fat, fruit and grain. There are associations that have setup an exchange system or point system. The point system is based on calories, amount and volume of food balanced throughout the day. In following a point system or exchange system then this will allow the day to day consistency required for diabetes and to ensure the proper balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat.
If your child is on insulin the timing of the meals and snacks must be eaten at the same time each day and the total calories and nutrients should be about the same each day. The calories allowed each day are also depending on the activity level of the child or extra food is needed for extra activity.




Fiber should also be added to the diet each day as this will help in the digestion, absorption and the metabolism of the nutrients that are consumed each day.
