Stop Type 2 Diabetes Now!

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body is not responding to insulin in a normal way. Your body's cells are unable to access the insulin that is produced; your body becomes insulin resistant, meaning your body resists the normal healthy functioning of insulin. They remain in your bloodstream instead of entering your cells and you end up with high insulin and blood sugar levels.
Over time, it is believed unstable blood sugars initiate complications such as:
  • heart disease
  • kidney disease
  • eye disease
  • nerve disease

Often it is the long-term complication itself, not your high blood sugar level, that leads to the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. If you suspect that you are vulnerable to this medical condition, it is best to see your heath care provider

right away. Type 2 diabetes doesn't develop overnight; so if it is diagnosed early enough, you may be able to take steps to avoid it developing fully. The thought that you might have diabetes can be frightening but, be assured, people with this condition have continued to live long healthy lives by managing their blood sugar levels.
Diabetes often develops with symptoms so mild they go unnoticed.  The following should alert you to the possibility of your developing diabetes:
  • unusual, unexplained tiredness
  • feeling abnormally thirsty
  • increasing urination including during the nigh time
  • increasing hunger, especially within a short time of eating
  • blurred vision
  • feeling nauseous
  • frequent infections and slow healing of wounds

Ignoring these symptoms increases your chances of developing full-blown type 2 as it is a "silent killer" disease.  There is really no obvious early symptom which is why it is important to watch out for, what is known as being, the commonest early warnings: unusual fatigue and feeling really thirsty and dehydrated. How can you stop developing this condition?
  • assess your physical condition, take a really good look at yourself ...  are you overweight?
  • is your diet a sensible one or loaded with fats and sugars, do you eat a lot of processed food?
  • how physically active are you; is exercise too much trouble?
  • do you smoke?

A "yes" answer to any of these questions should prepare you for a shock.  You can develop type 2 diabetes with that kind of lifestyle.  And the possibility increases if one of your parents or a close relative has diabetes also. What can you do?
  • lose 5-10% of your present weight.  If you are overweight, limiting your caloric intake is the single most important recommendation
  • exercise regularly ... 30 minutes of moderate activity at least 4 times each week.
  • consume a diet where carbohydrates (preferably low-GI) contributes 40 to 55% of total energy, protein 15 to 30% and fats (mostly mono and polyunsaturated) 25 to 30%.  Don't hesitate to get help from a dietitian working in the area of diabetes management

Exercise and diet can either reduce or delay the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 50%.  The best combination is the one that suits you.
Type 2 diabetes is the more prevalent form of diabetes. There are a number of diet and lifestyle changes you can implement to ensure you are not diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
