When you or a loved one discover that you may be diabetic or borderline diabetic, it's vital to understand what a safe blood sugar level means. Also, it is important to know how to measure your blood sugar. The following tips will give you guidance on the acceptable level of sugar in your blood.
Maybe you're wondering how the blood gets sugar in it at all. When you consume starchy foods, or carbs, your body converts the carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) to energize your cells. It's similar to recharging a battery, but we're talking about a human body instead of a car.
Anyway, the pancreas (an organ nestled just south of the stomach) makes sure the glucose or sugar gets put in its proper place in the body by using a special hormone that it creates. This hormone is called insulin. Yes, you have no doubt heard of insulin, but, maybe until now, you didn't know that the human body makes it.
The good thing about technology and gadgets is there are many different brands and types of blood testing tools available to use outside of the doctors' office. Find out from your doctor which specific type will suit your lifestyle and medical needs.
Keep in mind the following numbers when testing your blood glucose levels. Use this as a guide, but always refer to your doctor's specific recommendations.
- If your glucose reading is between seventy and one hundred fifty it is in the normal range. You'll notice that lower numbers will come at times when you have had very little or nothing to eat for several hours.

- There is a definite need for concern if you have a fasting glucose level 125. Fasting means that you have not ingested any food or drink in several hours (excluding water).
- At any time that you have a blood sugar reading at or above two hundred, this is an indication that you do, in fact, have diabetes.
Once you begin monitoring your blood glucose level, you will learn to record it and analyze it and be able to see the events that trigger the rise and fall of your blood sugar level. It's important to keep track of your habits and discuss them with your nutritionist or doctor.
Remember, early detection is vital. Diabetes can do a lot more than interrupt a normal blood sugar level. Later on there can be complications that affect the rest of the body. Damage to the eyes and kidneys is commonly associated in diabetic patients.
Diabetes is a treatable and manageable disease. In some type two cases it is possible to make healthy changes to your lifestyle that will actually stop type two in its tracks. If your numbers are out of the safe range, don't waste another minute, see your medical professional promptly for advice.
