Eating Healthy Can Reverse Diabetes

Newly diagnosed diabetics are directed to a make an appointment with a dietitian. At their first meeting, the new diabetic receives information regarding diet strategies and an approved food list. By placing the appointment at the top of the diabetic's to-do list, the importance of following a diet plan is reinforced.
There are steps a person can take to help prevent the occurrence of diabetes. Essential steps include keeping their blood glucose under control by living a healthy lifestyle through proper eating and exercising, keeping their weight within normal range, and assuring their cholesterol stays within normal levels.
One of the main culprits of the increase of obesity and therefore diabetes is a diet consisting mainly of processed food. Those who follow a diet plan similar to vegetarians tend to have normal blood sugar levels. Overweight people who exclude animal fat from their diet quickly lose 10 percent of their weight.

Following a predominately-vegetarian diet will not only lower blood sugar to a healthy level, but may also reduce or eliminate the need for medication. Other positive results include weight loss and lower cholesterol levels.
An added bonus of focusing on a vegetarian style-eating plan appears to be the elimination of the need to count calories.

Before making dramatic changes to their diet, newly diagnosed diabetics should discuss their health concerns with their primary care physician. Because diabetics often must take drugs to maintain their health, and keep a keen eye on what they eat, dietary changes could adversely affect their blood sugar. They should follow their physician or diabetic nurse educator's recommendations before making major changes to their diet.

Because someone has received a negative diagnosis does not mean he or she has received a death sentence. By taking a proactive approach to their health by making dietary changes and starting an exercise program, he or she can take control of their health. Following a diet plan similar to a vegetarian can help lead to a long and healthy life.
