The Types of Diabetes

Many people are suffering from diabetes nowadays and most of them had only known that they have diabetes in their late adult ages, that is, around their forties when the complications are already physically affecting them. When a person is diagnosed to have diabetes, he/she actually has what it is in medical terms as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which a person's body does not react as how it should in terms of producing and responding to a crucial hormone in our body that is produced by our pancreas. This hormone produced by the pancreas is insulin. And insulin is the hormone that turns the glucose in our bodies to energy that is why it is crucial.




When a person has diabetes, his body does not produce enough insulin or does not respond as it should to insulin or both. And consequently, the glucose in the body that is not turned into energy build up in the blood and this eventually leads to complications. There are many types of diabetes mellitus in medical terms. But the three major types are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is an effect of the failure of the body to produce enough insulin for the normal routines of the body. This is also called as juvenile diabetes since most of the children who are diagnosed to have diabetes have Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the loss of the beta cells in the pancreas that consequently leads to insulin deficiency. And also, in the early stages of Type 1 Diabetes, the patient responds properly to insulin. Type 1 Diabetes patients often needs insulin injections.
Type 2 Diabetes is an effect of the body's resistance to insulin in which the body cells use insulin improperly or fail to respond properly to insulin. This type of diabetes usually starts with a condition that is medically termed as Pre-diabetes in which the level of blood glucose in a person's body is more than what is normal. Type 2 Diabetes usually comes unnoticed. More physical activity and weight losing can be a treatment of this type of diabetes.




Gestational diabetes is the type of diabetes among pregnant women who have high levels of blood glucose or sugar and who had never been diagnosed of diabetes before. This type of diabetes can be completely treated although it requires thorough medical supervision during the pregnancy period. These are the major types of diabetes and these give us an overview about what diabetes is all about.
